Memories of Bala - Episode 1
As the first light of dawn kissed the sleepy village, young Bala eagerly embarked on his journey to school. He relished the feeling of the cool, dewy grass beneath his bare feet as he walked through the winding paths. School was quite a distance away, a good 45 minutes' walk, but Bala didn't mind. For him, it was an adventure every day.
Along the way, he joined his friends, a merry band of boys, as they made their way to the school grounds. Girls, on the other hand, walked in their own groups, giggling and chatting amongst themselves. There was an unspoken rule about boys and girls not mixing, but Bala didn't mind. He had his friends, and that was enough.
Their conversations were filled with dreams and aspirations, fueled by the latest movies they had seen or the upcoming funfairs in the village. Sometimes, they even dared to talk about their crushes, whispering secrets about who liked whom.
Despite having very little pocket money, they found joy in simple pleasures like sharing juicy mangoes or popping peppermints. And whenever they spotted a train or plane soaring high above, it was a moment of pure exhilaration, as if they were witnessing magic unfold before their eyes.
At school, amidst the hustle and bustle of classes, there was always time for mischief. Bala would often find himself daydreaming in class, his mind wandering to the girl he secretly admired. They would steal glances at each other and exchange furtive smiles, their little secret in a world of their own.
But all adventures must come to an end, and as the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Bala and his friends reluctantly made their way back home. Sometimes, they would linger a little longer, trying to savor every moment before facing the inevitable scolding from their parents for being late.
As Bala walked back home, lost in thought, he couldn't help but wonder about the mysteries of adolescence that seemed to be unfolding before him. But for now, he was content to bask in the memories of another day well spent in the company of friends and the simple joys of village life.
As Bala and his friend Udhay walked to school each day, their conversations often revolved around their shared love for Tamil movies. They would excitedly discuss the latest releases, dissecting every scene and dialogue with fervor. Udhay, with his encyclopedic knowledge of films, often teased Bala about his lack of expertise, but Bala didn't mind. For him, it was just another opportunity to learn something new from his friend.
However, not all interactions at school were pleasant. Some of the other boys would often make fun of Bala, mocking his lack of knowledge about certain topics, especially when it came to sex education. Bala would feel embarrassed and self-conscious, but he tried to brush it off; knowing that his true friends, like Udhay, accepted him for who he was.
In addition to facing ridicule from his peers, Bala also struggled academically, particularly in subjects like mathematics and carpentry. The math teacher would often scold him for his poor performance, while the carpentry master would mock his clumsy attempts at chiseling. Despite his efforts, Bala couldn't seem to grasp the concepts, which left him feeling frustrated and disheartened.
However, there was one teacher who showed a soft spot for Bala – his English teacher. She recognized his passion for literature and language, often encouraging him to pursue his interests. Her words of encouragement provided Bala with a glimmer of hope amidst his academic struggles.
Unlike many of his classmates, Bala had little interest in sports. The thought of running around on the field or kicking a ball held no appeal to him. However, there was one event that he looked forward to every year – Sports Day. On that day, the school would play records of Tamil movie songs during the 1000 meters race, filling the air with melodies that Bala loved. It was also a chance for him to spend more time with Udhay, away from the pressures of academics !
